Cosplay with Anika Vodicka

Mix together creative quests for inspiration and a little inventiveness to make our favorite cosplay photos. We’re happy to share insights about how we created these moments. We share more Behind the Scenes on our blog posts. Stay tuned for the next adventure.

One of our very favorite cosplays was the Fire Nation inspired by Avatar, The Last Airbender. This one came together with wardrobe, an old local building where the rising sun caught perfectly, and Anika’s graceful hair flip that made her magic look alive. We sewed the ribbons in her hair around pipe cleaners so they would twist around her half-buns without knots or loose ends. Actually, now that I think, these hair ribbons were first made for a Miraculous Ladybug cosplay. Repurposing is one of our favorite things :)

I wrote more about our process, the secret of the flames, and shared an animation of the hair flip here.

Alice and the Red Queen were a inspired by a photoshoot with Portrait Slam (a creative opportunity for invited photographers and models).

We bought the red queen dress over the summer in Reno, Nevada. We knew that we would find just the right place for making it come alive. When we saw the little black dress on loan from Discovery Shop Auburn, I wondered how we could bring the story together in one frame.

Thus, a composite. I knew that I needed a room where I could take a photo at one time of the event, then return to show the other character on the opposite side of the room. This red velvet couch on an upstairs landing was almost perfect. I wrote more about the photography process here.

For us, the recently turned zombies are especially creepy. The question lingers about whether these zombies are really dead, or seriously injured people in shock and needing medical attention. This idea about recently turned zombies inspired the cosplay which also found a home in a haunted house for Halloween.

We scoured thrift stores for wardrobe, especially on half off day. Distressing a UCSC Banana Slug sweatshirt was rough, but it was in rough shape when we found (not this rough but not pristine). About a week before we needed them, they selectively cut and stained the shirts with red acrylic paint. The nice thing about this cosplay was that it was easy to layer with warmer, not messed up clothing underneath.

The zombie make up was handmade scratches with liquid latex. They looked incredibly realistic!
