Winter Travels in Northern Nevada County

We don’t often choose to be on the road in snowstorms. However, we drove to Truckee for a commission photographing a family gathering. Their travel plans meant that we couldn’t reschedule for easier weather patterns. We spent a few hours on the road. Worth it. Because the family was lovely, the photos were precious. And we got to see the trees heavy with recent snow. Which inspires me every time. And we discovered a new location. The Sawyer at Schaffers Mill was a charming restaurant with stunning scenes of winter beauty. And a giant outdoor firepit.

Anika and Giovanni create a fantastic team with me. Giovanni is the master of flash equipment. And Anika is a reflector queen. I am such a fortunate mama that I get to bring Anika along as a photography assistant. We have great adventures together.

On the way back, we stopped at the Omega Diggins Overlook. Where mist clung to the lower valleys. It was freezing and beautiful and freezing :)

The adventure took longer than expected, but adventures rarely follow tidy plans.

Anika and I were inspired for winter cosplays. What should we bring to the snow next?

We’ve brought a Jedi, Belle, and Red Riding Hood. Wonder if we could pull off an Elsa… hmmmm.

As always, check winter conditions before getting on roads in Nevada County (or anywhere in snow country). And please don’t trust a GPS when it suggests a side-road to avoid freeway slowdowns. We noticed a lot of folks exiting towards a perfect summer side-road, but it was going to be treacherous in snow and ice. And pack water and snacks (and a few blankets. Fill the gas tank. Because you never know when you might be spending a lot of time in the car. Be safe while adventuring :)

Wishing all of us many winter wonders :)
