Surprise Snow
Surprise! We woke up to a winter wonderland this week. The storm passed in the early morning hours, which added sunshine to the frosted landscape. So pretty!
I quickly explored the backyard with Chewie. He nosed around in drifts of snow. He loves exploring and playing in snow. He scampered around after me. I delighted in that hush of fallen snow. And the creak underfoot with each step.
The pool had a sheen of snowy ice over the top. Which did lead to a scary moment. The girls came outside to check out the snow and frozen pool. Chewie and I joined them inside the pool fence.
Chewie doesn’t like swimming. He’s careful around the pool. But for some reason the ice gave an illusion of a solid surface, or he slipped as he sniffed at the water. I heard a splash. He had gone face first into the frigid hot tub. I stood right beside him, so I handed off the camera to Anika and quickly called him towards me. He swam, confused I’m sure, breaking up the ice towards the center of the hot tub.
“I have to jump in there,” I thought. I fully expected to polar bear swim (fortunately in shallow water) when Chewie turned and paddled towards me. Thank goodness he has a collar. I hauled him out of the frigid water. He ran right inside where we could dry him off. He spent the rest of the day sleeping, hopefully with warmer dreams.
Here he is moments before his unfortunate polar bear swim, and the pool ice.
I understand how the ice may have tricked him. I am so grateful for our pool fence (even though I lament prettier options). Pool fences are such a safety feature. Thank goodness we were inches away to rescue him quickly.
Meanwhile, as he warmed up, we got to keep playing in the snow and enjoying the scenery.
What a lovely wintery morning* 💙
*even though I am so over the cold temperatures!
