Thanks, Disney!

March 8, 2010 by Lenka No Comments »

I wanted to send a thank you out to the Disney parks for their Give-A-Day-Get-a-Day program, here.  I figured that we would not be able to participate, because going out to a jobsite somewhere to volunteer is just not possible for me.  I checked anyway.  And sure enough, there are tons of opportunities for creative volunteering.  We made blankets for kids who are in need, in hospitals or foster homes.
Don’t worry, the machine is unplugged. :)   No babies were harmed in the making of these blankets.

We sewed our blankets for the Binky Patrol in Lincoln.  And while I knew it would be a rewarding experience, I underestimated how much it would mean to Anika, and even myself.  Giving is huge.  Some days I feel like a charity case myself. So it’s great to feel empowered.  To feel helpful.

We’re still waiting to see how the whole ticket part plays out, but at this point that hardly matters anymore.  The reward was really in the doing.

So thank you, Disney, for inspiring one million people to go out of their comfort zone and give to the community.  Our family will be making more blankets in the future!

Clean and Sew and Fix Freezers

Ian worked hard today.  He hung out with Grandma while I volunteered in Anika’s classroom.  He napped a short while when I got home, which was good because the rest of the day was work work work. :)

First he swept in his gDiaper and slippers.  Then he helped me sew blankets for a local charity, The Binky Patrol, which gives blankets to kids in need of comfort.  He was a great organizer of thread :)
In the afternoon, we dealt with the refrigerator, which has been slowly warming over the past month.  We finally called for help.  Ian was fascinated by the tools.  By the taken-apart freezer.  By the electric drill.

A busy busy day.  He’ll show off the blanket we made for the Binky Patrol :)
