Right Click Podcast Review: Portable iPad Speakers

November 25, 2011 by Lenka No Comments »

iMainGoXP By Portable Sound Laboratories
Ultra-Portable iPad stereo speaker case
by Giovanni

The Good:
It’s a solid case with 4 speakers and internal rechargeable battery that works with with iPad and iPad2. Great design in this price range make the iMainGoXP a great way to enjoy watching movies on your iPad at home or on the road with the internal 6hr rechargeable battery. The speakers are best suited for movie watching as the stereo surround effects create a nice personal space of cinema enjoyment.

The Bad:
The sound quality is good at lower levels but the midrange tones quickly disappear at higher volumes when listening to music, making this speaker case best suited for movie watching. Slightly hard to open locking tabs make the case hard to open at first but does loosen up with use. The case cover is a fingerprint magnet but only really noticeable up close

The Verdict:

A good value at $119 with solid build quality and good sound, turning your iPad into a personal movie theatre. I wouldn’t recommend this case to an audiophile expecting “big sound to fill a room” as this case is not intended to compete in that market. The case is best used as an accessory to enhance the multimedia experience of your iPad when traveling, in the car, or at home.

Design and features:
At first glance this case reminds me of the portable DVD players made popular a few years back. The size is fairly comparable to a slightly thicker 10” netbook. Once you manage to pull the 2 locking tabs which I found to be very tight even for me, it opens to show the speakers and iPad. I can see how a person with limited hand strength would definitely have a problem opening the case but I did notice the tabs did loosen with use. Inside you will find 4 1½”  speakers and tuned bass ports. The case includes  a snap on cradle for the iPad2 or skip it if you have the original iPad.  One added feature which I didn’t explore were the two headphone jacks for private movie screening or in the car. The included internal rechargeable battery adds just a little bit of weight. A wall charger is included.  The case also includes a sturdy easel type stand lets you prop your iPad on a table at various viewing angles.  Overall design of this product is better than expected in this price range.

Performance:
I can’t stress enough that this speaker system performs really well in this price range. Other iPad speaker cases in this category were lacking key elements like an internal battery and looked more like add on speakers mounted to a lightweight case. It’s very obvious that this speaker case system was intended for movie watching and not so much for music at higher sound levels. The stereo separation is very audible and the tuned bass ports help the small speakers deliver bigger sound, but this effect is not as noticeable when listening to music. Performance is just okay when playing music at higher levels as the mids are absent and the music sounds flat, but not enough to be unacceptable, just a limitation of the size of the speakers. Battery life did come close to 6 hrs at a comfortable listening volume making this a nice travel speaker case for your iPad.

Podcast: iPhone 4S review and a Dolphin Tale

October 21, 2011 by Lenka 2 Comments »

Episode 35 Show Notes

I reflect on CMT Awareness month and how I have more questions than ever about an ever-changing disorder.

I saw the Dolphin Tale movie with Anika and I share thoughts abut our reactions.

Then, the iPhone 4S for the disability community.  How well can it correct my many typos?  How useful is Siri, really?  And can a smart-phone make my life better, easier, healthier, and more connected?

Is that too much to ask?

Enjoy!

Oh, and an awesome poem by Cristal!  Mutants of the world, unite :)

Podcast! The Disability Community Dream and Technology News

January 23, 2011 by Lenka No Comments »

Episode 31 Show Notes

I have a dream.  My dream is that we will not be judged by our diagnosis.  We will not be defined by our tools- our wheelchairs and braces and medications.  We will not be lost, sad, or damaged.  We will be whole.  We will be appreciated.  We will be seen for our gifts and our contributions.  We will be called strong.

Because we are strong.  I know.  It takes incredible strength to journey this path less traveled.

And in my dream, it is okay to ask for help.  Helping is a gift and a joy instead of a burden.

And that chasm between us, the healthy and sick, the injured and whole, that chasm is seen as small.  A moment in time, a diagnosis or wrong turn, and we are not so far apart.  We are all the same.  Even when we look or sound or think differently.

We are not challenged by choice, but we choose to rise up to the challenges.

In this dream, when we say disability, or we say wheelchair or accommodation, the answer is . . . so what?  Who are you?  And why should I care if you walk or roll down the path?

That is my dream.

Welcome 2011!  And I talk tech, of course :)

Podcast! Interview with Patricia, Inventor of CosySoles

November 22, 2010 by Lenka No Comments »

Episode 30 Show notes

This is a determined podcast.  We had challenges with the snowstorm messing with our technical plans (so the recorded podcast was actually take 3 :) ) and I have a lingering cold. I even say Episode 29 instead of 30 and I forget the date in the beginning.  Oops. We almost rescheduled.  But we persisted and I enjoyed our conversation a lot.  Patricia and I started talking about CosySole slippers and handwarmers.  These innovative products allow you to heat them in the microwave and walk around the house or relax in comfort.  Her journey bringing CosySoles to the market is an amazing story of creativity and tenacity.

We then talked about family and CMT (Patricia also has CMT) and life-philosophy (of course :) ).  How has health issues both frustrated and inspired us?  How does it affect our relationships with our children?  Is one mind-set or approach better than another?  Is it better to fight symptoms or accept limitations?

Can we believe that challenges are small and make them fade?

Or do make them worse when we validate them and believe that the challenges are real?

And what influences genetic coding?  How can our beliefs, even before we were were born, influence our life path?

Like I said, a fascinating conversation!  Thank you so much, Patricia, for sharing your stories.  As I’ve said many times before, meeting people like you is the entire reason I publish these podcasts.  We are such a strong, dynamic community!  I believe in us :)

First Impressions of the MacBook Air

October 23, 2010 by Lenka No Comments »

Since we are your tech pioneers, we had to adventure to an Apple store to check out the new MacBook Air for you.  Very impressive.  I loved the light machine.  Most laptops are too heavy for me to carry on an adventure.  Not this one.  We’ll be talking about it more on Sunday’s live show, 2pm Pacific.  See you here!
