Free Children’s Book Activity

October 5, 2011 by Lenka No Comments »

I was Guest Teacher in my daughter’s second/third grade class yesterday.  I found this in my second grade file.  I haven’t done it for years because it’s more of a concenptual challenge for my kindergarten/first grade students.  I forgot how much kids love this idea.  And how it supports early readers.  Flip books are awesome because children hold the familiar text and only have to decode part of the sentence to share the entire page.

And it’s silly.  Nothing’s better than a silly flip book.

I posted over at Forest Fairy Crafts (that site allows downloadable files).  Click here for the post with the PDF download.  Enjoy!

Day 11

September 11, 2011 by Lenka No Comments »

I feel strange writing today, because I’ve seen so many powerful and touching posts about remembering 9/11.  And, honestly, I cannot piece the words together to add to the collective stories.  My thoughts, my best energy goes out to the families who have been forever-changed by that day.  I wish I could do you justice in words.  But I will have to settle for simple sentiments.  My brain is mushed today.

I did write my guest post for The National CMT Resource Center, which made me happy.  I had a good time with it.  I’ll post the link as soon as I know it’s live.

But it took a lot of brain-power.  The coffee and Pepsi didn’t help.  Medicine didn’t help.  And I got to sleep early last night.  I don’t know.  That vague headache came back and settled behind my eyes.  The world was dull.  Or I was dull.  More likely me :)

My foot bothered me.  A lot.  Which was strange since I’ve been resting the past day.  Oh well, cause-and-effect seems to be harder to control.  Just another of those days, I guess.

Oh, and I also got the Moody Pumpkin tutorial posted here.  I can see this being a great tool for kids learning to express their feelings.  A few in my class could use it to show the Mad Face.  Because it can be hard to talk when they’re overwhelmed with emotions.  So I may try it as a little class project :)

It was an easier project because Asia created the pumpkin and wrote the text and I did the layout with the photos.

I guess it sounds strange that I feel so muddled and yet I keep writing, posting, crafting.  Why don’t I just  . . . take a break?

That thought that crossed my mind today.  I hardly slow down when I feel lousy anymore.  I used to pay more attention.  I used to disengage from activities.  And ten years ago I could do that.  Back then, when I felt sick, I could make rest a priority.  Because within a day or two I felt like myself again.

But, with my CMT these days, there may not be a ‘better’ day.  At least, not for a long time.  I cannot wait for the energy so that I can fold laundry, or take the kids to the park.  I cannot count on feeling better tomorrow.  I might feel worse.  So I push through.  Do the best I can.  And hope.

That tomorrow will be a better day.

Oh, I dreamed of zombies :) .  In the past, zombies have symbolized CMT.  In this dream, a zombie caught me and was about to devour me.  Then someone yelled, “You can fight them.”  I shoved the zombie off and ran down the hall into another room.  I tried to lock the doors but they wouldn’t close.  The wood was warped.  Each noise echoed down the hall and I kept slamming the door, trying with all my might to make it lock.  The zombies were bound to notice the commotion.  If only I was a little stronger . . .

Then I woke up.

So tonight I hope for peaceful dreams :) .  No zombies.  And a better day tomorrow.

Day 3

September 3, 2011 by Lenka No Comments »

Today was a good day.  And it’s important to take notice of the good days, too.  Because having a chronic condition can be very scary.  And for those people just learning about a CMT diagnosis, it’s important to hear that there are better days, too.  It’s not all doom and gloom.

I did notice how the first hour of the day hurts as I stretch my legs and get the blood flowing again.  I know there are splints that some people wear overnight, but it seems like it would be hard to sleep with my feet all rigid.  So the stretching’s fine.

And I made a witch!  My hand went numb within a few stitches, those numb-ribbons under my skin again, but I didn’t mind.  She’s worth it.

We stuck around the house except for an outing to get two goldfish.  Ian’s first pet.  He picked the littlest white one with an orange spot on its head.  The fish’s name is Fishy.  Of course :) .  Anika’s orange fish with black spots on the tail is named CoCo Hope.

And yes, I had moments of pain, but they didn’t overshadow the fun today.  That makes today what I call a very good day :)

Forest Fairy Crafts Website

My New Bumblebee Fairy

It’s official!  We have a website for Forest Fairy Crafts.  My husband is amazing with technology.  Amazing.  We think of something in the morning and by evening, ta da!  It’s real.  So we now have ForestFairyCrafts.com.  I find the site lovely :) .  We used Squarespace, which is a paid service.  But I bump against the limits of WordPress when I want to post free resources or patterns.  Squarespace has a lot of room to grow.  We’ll have seasonal patterns for free as well as announcements, fairy sightings, and more.

So exciting!

Our Oomees

July 9, 2011 by Lenka No Comments »

We were inspired by the Oobee Bears by Leslie Keating at onegirl.   We had fun!

Anika named our version the Oomee Bears.  They took some creative-thinking, but we’re quite pleased :)

Ian chose an orange face.  He calls it Dude, as in “Where my Dude?”  He loves throwing Dude around so much, Dude is now lost in the house somewhere . . .

Monika made an artsy version that I might keep for myself :)

Anika wanted different ears and her Oomee ended up with lots of personality.

They’ll have plenty of adventures, I’m sure.  They were tons of fun to make . . . even more for the kids to play with :)

Our Busy Week

July 6, 2011 by Lenka No Comments »

This week in summer camp is crazy-fun.  My cousin is staying the week.  She’s fourteen and loves kids.  A wonderful thing.  She’s keeping these two plenty-entertained.  So far this week we have had a lemonade stand.  Anika is donating the money to her school.  She’s made $5.  She’s thrilled.

Ian takes breaks to go fishing in a tree.  Could he catch a bird?

We also finished Anika’s ballerina fairy this week.  She designed this fairy with the short skirts and ballerina shoes :)

And they got very creative luring drivers to buy lemonade.  Ian made up some great dance moves :)

Tomorrow we’re trying an ambitious craft project (even for me :) ).  Hopefully I get to post the fun results soon.
